The Supernatural Olympic Games or Supernatural Olympics were a sports event held every four years (two if counting Supernatural Winter Olympics since 1994). They were held shortly before the Olympics in the same locations, although the event's existence is kept secret from the non-supernatural locals.
The contest was first held at some point in or before 1964, as the Tokyo 1964 Olympics were among the games held as Supernatural Olympics. The contest continued to be held for many years, and was still held in 2020 with no signs of the contest getting discontinued.
During the supernatural Olympics, the place was surrounded by magic that prevented beings from using their supernatural abilities as an advantage. Magic was also put in place to keep locals from noticing the event. In addition, these Olympics were less strict when it came to participation requirements. For example, robots were allowed to participate as athletes at the Supernatural Olympics. The only rule was that all participants must either be supernaturals or inhabitants of other dimensions. Athletes from the Avocado Isles were also allowed to enter on the basis that their countries were neither officially recognized nor claimed by any officially recognized countries and as such unable to participate at the actual Olympics.
Supernatural Olympics had all events regular Olympics have along with more extreme versions of them, known as Dream Events. Due to the nature of Dream Events, magical protection had to be put in place to ensure the safety of the athletes. Dream Events were often held further away from the main location, sometimes even in other dimensions or space.
Known Supernatural Olympics Edit
This was first known instance of Mobians participating in the Supernatural Olympics.
Participants at these Olympics included Mario Robotnik and his uncle Julian Robotnik, fathers of Mario Mario and Ivo Robotnik, respectively. However, they ended with a fight between the two Robotniks, and Mario eventually left the family, choosing not to use the name Robotnik anymore.
The Olympics ended up in a disaster for many participants involved, and because of this, many years went by without participants from Mobius or the Mushroom Kingdom.
Despite the fading portal magic in the Forgotten Realms, the area signed up for the 2002 Winter Olympics. One participant was a polar bear named Nancy, who participated in figure skating. Two Rhynocs also participated. Nancy managed to win gold in the sport, which was her goal.
Amy Rose showed interest in founding an Olympic Committee and originally planned to participate in these Olympics. However, as they could not set up everything in time, they did not participate yet.
The Beijing 2008 Supernatural Olympics introduced two newcomer teams, both from a different dimension, and both were the first teams from their respective dimensions in over 40 years. They signed up for the Olympics in 2007. Those two were the Olympic committee of Mario's world, lead by Princess Peach, and the Olympic committee of Mobius, lead by Amy Rose. Some members of them became athetes while others became referees.
The Olympic Committee of Mobius originally announced their participation in April 2007. However, due to the start of the second Eggman War and many of the potential athletes going missing shortly afterwards, it was believed that they could not participate. However, in November 2007, the war ended, and Amy Rose announced that the Olympic Committee of Mobius would participate at the games.
The Olympic Committee of the Avocado Isles was founded at some point by this year, and athletes from this region were allowed to participate in the Supernatural Olympics due to the region not being included in the International Statute of Secrecy.
The teams from Mobius and Mario's world returned. Due to Vancouver's location being at the dimensional connecting point, both Olympic committees offered some locations from their dimensions as venues for the Dream Events. Such locations included Seaside Hill. Some athletes even went to space to compete in Dream Ski Jumping.
Another Olympic committee was formed by inhabitants of both Mobius and Mario's world. Its sole purpose was to rival the others, and each member in it only participated in a single event or only a few events. However, none of the members managed to win their events.
Santa Claus was among the audience at these Olympics.
Mario's and Sonic's teams returned to the Olympics, as well as the rival team (although that year, Birdo replaced Big Bullet Bill as a member). The tradition of hosting Dream Events in their dimensions also continued despite the Olympics being in London.
Although Eggman and Bowser were invited to the games, they lost their invitations, and thought they weren't invited. As a result, they decided to cover London with fog machines. They were eventually stopped by Mario and Sonic, who defeated them by beating them in Olympic sports.
The Olympic Committees (including the rivals) returned to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The Rival committee no longer had Dry Bones participating, but otherwise, there were no changes to the three committees.
That year, some inhabitants of both Sonic's and Mario's world agreed to join the Olympic committee to compete in one or only a few events. Some of these were former members of the Olympic Committee of Rivals, which was disbanded due to this.
Rules got broken when Mario Mario illegally entered the closing ceremony of the non-supernatural Olympics after capturing the Prime Minister of Japan.
Due to Mario illegally entering the closing ceremony in 2016, his team was banned from the 2018 Supernatural Olympics. Sonic's team decided not to participate in respect of their rivals, as the teams had become close during their times together. The Olympic Committee of the Avocado Isles still participated, and they offered to host some of the Dream Events on Star Island.
As Mario's ban from the Olympics was over, the teams of Mario and Sonic returned to the 2020 Olympics. This return was announced by both Olympic Committees in 2019. At these Olympics, most of the participants wore actual sports clothing instead of their typical outfits.
In March 2020, even though the actual Olympics were moved to 2021, it was announced that the Supernatural Olympics would still be taking place in 2020. The Olympic Committee of the Avocado Isles announced that they would not participate at these Olympics due to this, as their islands had banned traveling to and from anywhere outside the islands for the time being.
Cream and Toad, previously athletes of Olympic Committees, returned to their jobs as referees. Toad gave his spot in the Committee to Toadette, the only new athlete in either of the two Olympic Committees.
Star Island 2021 Edit
In June 2020, Star Island started considering the possibility of hosting replacement Supernatural Olympics in 2021. These Olympics would be held at the same time as the actual Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and were open to all participants of the Supernatural Olympics. The event would not officially considered part of the Supernatural Olympics.
In August 2020, Star Island however hesitated, stating that they might not be ready to host Olympics in 2021 after all. They stated that their decision on whether or not to hold them was not final, and they would definitely not hold the event if the actual Tokyo 2020 Olympics got cancelled.
Mario and Sonic showed interest in attending the event even though they were already at the Tokyo 2020 Supernatural Olympics. The leaders of their respective committees, Amy and Princess Peach, also showed interest. Other members of their committees, however, were less interested in joining the event.

The Supernatural Olympics allowed referees to be from the same country/region as athletes participating in the event, even allowing athletes of a participating Olympic Committee to be referees. However, as always, referees had to be impartial and could be fired/banned from the Olympics if they were caught breaking this rule.

As with all events, the Supernatural Olympics have faced a number of controversies during their hosting.
A general controversy surrounding the contest was holding it in the venues of the actual Olympic Games, which required much work in order to keep the event hidden from the locals in accordance of the Statute of Secrecy. It was suggested many times that more hidden locations should be used as the venues, but with the exception of Dream Events, nothing like this was ever done.
During the 1964, a massive fight involving Mario Robotnik, Julian Robotnik and Rocco O'Hedge caused controversy among the Supernatural Olympic Committees. This fight lead to both the Mushroom Kingdom and Mobius withdrawing from the Supernatural Olympics after only one participation, and they would not return to the event for another 40 years.
In November 2007, Amy Rose announced that the Olympic Committee of Mobius would participate at the 2008 Olympics after all, as it was previously thought their participation would be cancelled due to the Second Eggman War. However, the decision to allow Eggman to join the Olympic Committee was met with controversy due to the fact that Eggman was a major causer of the war.
In 2012, Ivo Robotnik and Bowser placed fog machines all over London, almost leading to the cancellation of the Supernatural Olympics and risking exposure to the public. After the fog machines were destroyed, the controversial decision to still let Eggman and Bowser compete was made.
In 2016, Mario Mario possessed the Prime Minister of Japan during the closing ceremony of the official Rio 2016 Olympics during the section introducing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Due to this, the Supernatural Olympics banned Mario Mario from participating at the PyeongChang 2018 Supernatural Olympics. It is unknown why Mario did this.
In March 2020, the Supernatural Olympic Committee made the controversial decision to still hold the Supernatural Olympics in 2020. As a result of this, the Olympic Committee of Avocado Isles announced their withdrawal from the Olympics.
Behind the Scenes Edit
- The Supernatural Olympics are based on the Mario & Sonic series, where the two titular characters and other characters from their series participate at the Olympics.
- Mario, Sonic and others having their ancestors participate at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics is a reference to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 featuring events taking place at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics.
- Mario's team getting banned from the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics is due to there not being a Mario & Sonic game for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics in real life, as Ubisoft had managed to purchase rights for the event before Sega could.
- The Olympic Committee of the Avocado Isles not participating at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is a reference to the fact that there are no Miis in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
